The Ohio State University Alumni Club of Greater Boston
Opportunity
OSU alumni living in the Boston area wanted to stay connected to their alma mater through group activities such as university guest speakers, parties during TV football games, picnics and other events. They needed a Web site to attract new members and get the word out to the over 3,500 OSU alumni residing in eastern Massachusetts.
Engagement
Members wanted a lively site with useful information. Our solution was a bold scarlet, gray and black color scheme to identify with the school colors and to recreate with the users a connection with Ohio State.
Since alumni clubs require involvement to be successful, we created a user interface that allowed content to be easily updated by almost anyone with a connection to the Internet and a simple text editor.
Alumni can join the club online and immediately have a voice in the types of activities they want and choose how they will be involved.
OSU supports alumni leadership training, so we included a president's page to provide a forum for that leadership. Originally, club officers were featured with photos and bios to create a more personal experience and to put a face with a name for alumni attending events.
The site keeps alumni connected to other OSU club sites, the sports media, gift sellers, and even the local Columbus and campus newspapers.
Perspective
Volunteerism is the key to Alumni club activity levels. In Boston, the Web site sustains the group and serves as their sole communication tool. The club saves over $2,300 in postage costs every year. Members maintain the site.
